To understand the mentality of the first time walker is a unique phenomenon. Getting picked up by the sweeper vans is not an option, staying on the trail for all 60 miles is the goal. No blisters on the feet are big enough to get the most determined walker off the trail. The silent signs of dehydration come on when you stop talking and stop being nice. Sandy's goal was to walk all 60 miles in honor and memory of her mom who died of BC . (Sandy carried her mom's handkerchief with her for strength and comfort. Sandy lost the hankie along the trail and was really devastated. It was a small miracle that a fellow walker found it and got it back to her.) She was worn out and QUIET, sitting on the side of the trail when her new best friend Jessy came by and asked her what she was doing. "contemplating getting on the bus for the last 15 minutes." Jessy said you don't want to get on bus, let's go. Jessy took her hand and helped her up back on the trail to go it again. I think Jess remembers helping Sandy but I don't think she knows Sandy will never forget that powerful act of love.
My first walk in 2002 My daughter Sara thought it would be fun to do something together. I said 'yes', I would walk 500 miles to be with my daughters. Then in 04, my youngest daughter Jessy invited me to walk. That was super fun. Fast-forward to 2007 and I get stage one breast cancer. It was small, found on a mammogram, and treated with drugs and radiation. (Early detection IS the cure). I am giving back and once again walking with my beautiful daughters Jessy and Sara.
