Do something BOLD for the 3Day!!!

On August 5th my sister Penny and I will be working as crew for the Chicago Susan G Komen 3Day Walk for the Cure. We are members of Top Shelf Chicago. Our team is at 70% to meeting our goal!!

Jessy, my daughter, put this team together. Sara, my daughter and Carly, Penny's daughter are walking again. But it's our new walkers I am writing on behalf of.

This year, two new friends from Chicago will be participating. I remember my first walk - I could not believe how powerful and wonderful it was. I need your help to get these wonderful women to goal.

They will walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.

They have agreed to raise at least $2,300 in donations. So I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation of $10 in honor of me, a survivor who can testify personally that your donation will help find a cure. Keep in mind how far they are walking - and how hard they will have to train. You can give online at The3Day.org. Just follow the link above to visit their personal fundraising Web page and make a donation. You can also call 800-996-3DAY to donate over the phone.

I am so impressed with the commitment of these young women to fight for a cause I believe in. I remember my first walk in 2002 - I never thought that first step in Atlanta would lead to this journey but I knew I was experiencing something so much big than myself and something so good.

One person is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the United States. To do something bold about breast cancer. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting Susie and Nicole's fundraising efforts.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

2002 & 2004 Michigan Breast Cancer 3Day

This is one of my favorite shots of Jessy and Sandy. That's no joke those two have a sweet bond with one another that gives me joy beyond belief. Sandy calls Jessy 'jessylou' or 'beast' and Jessy thinks of Sandy like a good friend. They spent lots of time together during the 2004 walk and that arm in arm action helped hold each other up during the rough times on the trail.

To understand the mentality of the first time walker is a unique phenomenon. Getting picked up by the sweeper vans is not an option, staying on the trail for all 60 miles is the goal. No blisters on the feet are big enough to get the most determined walker off the trail. The silent signs of dehydration come on when you stop talking and stop being nice. Sandy's goal was to walk all 60 miles in honor and memory of her mom who died of BC . (Sandy carried her mom's handkerchief with her for strength and comfort. Sandy lost the hankie along the trail and was really devastated. It was a small miracle that a fellow walker found it and got it back to her.) She was worn out and QUIET, sitting on the side of the trail when her new best friend Jessy came by and asked her what she was doing. "contemplating getting on the bus for the last 15 minutes." Jessy said you don't want to get on bus, let's go. Jessy took her hand and helped her up back on the trail to go it again. I think Jess remembers helping Sandy but I don't think she knows Sandy will never forget that powerful act of love.
